On Sept 11th we walked around in a stupor all day. On the 12th, still in a stupor, we got in the van and drove the 700 miles or so to Kansas, thinking at any moment we might get a phone call from the Winfield folks, saying they'd decided to cancel the festival. After all, they were shutting down baseball, football and who knows what other kinds of entertainment for the weekend. But, they didn't cancel the festival, and thank goodness. Some performers and the camping crowd was already there, anyway--some had been there for more than 2 weeks! They got more than a bit of criticism locally, we read about in the paper. But the paper quoted our friend, Rex Flottman (Rex is one of those Winfield organizer people you see everywhere at once), and Rex said it right, "Music is not only used in celebration, it also provides comfort." It was a great festival--not all the performers on the bill were able to make it, but nobody seemed to mind. And the picking and performing was still mind boggling. This was our 5th Winfield in a row, and we're always sort of amazed they keep asking us back. We always do manage to have quite a lot of fun, from a couple of great sets on Stage 3, to a Sat night visit to the campground. We are still a bit bummed
about our friends at Flamingo Camp (need we say more?). They came
in second in their quest for the Golden Potty Award (umm...you see, the
camp that wins gets the Golden Potty...their own private porta-potty--next
year...) We were sure they'd win. Maybe next year...
